“Bless you!” Bless the Lord!” Both kinds of blessing prayers are found throughout the Bible. The best known of Old Testament prayers asking God’s blessing on people has been traditionally called the blessing of Aaron: “The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord let His face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon kindly and give you peace! (Numbers 6:24-26) An ancient blessing of people and objects is the blessing of Moses: “May you be blessed in the city , and blessed in the country! Blessed be the fruit of you womb, the produce of your soil and the offspring of your live stock. The issue of your herds and the young of your flocks! Blessed be your grain bin and your kneading bowl! May you be blessed in your coming in, and blessed in your going out!” (Deuteronomy 28:3-6). There are many Old Testament blessing prayers that praise God. A good example is Psalm 103, whose first verse is an enthusiastic invitation to glorify God: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all by being, bless His holy name!” Next Week: What are “Sacramentals” continues…
